Welcome to Women’s Studies

The School of Women’s Studies, functioning under Utkal University, is a pioneering institution dedicated to advancing women’s empowerment, gender equity, and social development through teaching, research, training, and advocacy. Established in 1996 with the introduction of a Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Women’s Studies, the School received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a Women’s Studies Research Centre in 1999.

As the first state-level Centre for Women’s Studies in Odisha, the School has played a significant role in promoting gender-sensitive education and research in the region. It offers a Master’s Degree programme in Women’s Studies and a Ph.D. programme in Women’s Studies, fostering academic excellence and critical engagement with gender issues. The Centre continues to receive support and grants from the UGC for its research and extension activities, while the Master’s Degree programme is conducted under the Self-Financing Course (SFC) mode.

Over the years, the School has emerged as a leading centre for interdisciplinary scholarship and community engagement, contributing substantially to policy discourse, capacity building, and the advancement of women’s rights and development in Odisha and beyond.

Vision

  •  To  be a centre of excellence in Gender Studies that fosters competency-based, inclusive and transformative education, advancing gender justice, social equity, innovation, and sustainable development through interdisciplinary learning, research, technology integration, and community engagement.

Mission

  •  To provide competency-based and learner-centric education that equips students with critical thinking, analytical, research, communication and leadership skills to address contemporary gender issues.

  • To institutionalize experiential, research-driven, and skill-oriented pedagogy through fieldwork, internships, community engagement, action research, and participatory learning approaches.

  • To promote interdisciplinary perspectives by integrating insights from social sciences, humanities, law, public policy, health, technology and development studies to address complex gender concerns.

  • To  leverage digital technologies and innovative teaching-learning methods for enhancing academic excellence, accessibility and lifelong learning.

  • To undertake high-quality research and knowledge creation that contribute to gender-sensitive policies, social transformation and evidence-based decision-making.

  • To  enhance employability, entrepreneurship and professional competencies among students through skill development, capacity building and collaboration with governmental, non-governmental, and industry stakeholders.

  • To nurture socially responsible citizens and future leaders committed to gender equality, constitutional values, nation-building, and sustainable development.
