Established on 1st December 1959, the Department of History is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments of Utkal University. For over six decades, it has nurtured generations of students with a passion for history, critical inquiry, and academic excellence. The Department encourages students to understand the past through evidence and diverse perspectives while appreciating its relevance to the present. Rooted in Odisha’s rich historical and cultural heritage and connected to wider national and global histories, it fosters quality teaching, meaningful research, and active engagement with society.

Vision

To become a center of excellence in the study of history by promoting an unbiased understanding of the past through quality teaching, meaningful research and community engagement, helping students to connect history with the present and contribute to a better future.

Mission

  • To provide a vibrant learning environment that encourages critical thinking, interdisciplinary research, use of archives, heritage, museums, digital resources, while promoting a deeper understanding of local, national, and global histories.
  • To nurture responsible and informed citizens by fostering a lifelong interest in history, an appreciation of India’s rich cultural heritage, diversity, and the ability to understand contemporary issues through historical perspectives.
