Understanding Inclusive Governance, Power and Global Transformation

Established in 1958 at Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, and relocated to Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar in 1962, the Department of Political Science is one of the oldest centres of Political Science education in Eastern India. Recognized under UGC-SAP DRS-I and DRS-II, the Department offers M.A. and Ph.D. programmes and promotes excellence in teaching, research, public engagement and policy studies. It nurtures critical inquiry into governance, democracy, development, international relations and contemporary political processes through interdisciplinary learning, field engagement and academic innovation.

Thrust Areas of Research

Vision

To develop the Department into a Centre for Excellence in Political Studies, generating cutting-edge research that links local issues with global debates in emerging areas of Political Science, while introducing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses aligned with NEP 2020 in pursuit of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Odisha.

Mission

  • To develop collaborative research programmes with Government and other research institutions of national and international repute.
  • To make the subject inclusive and multidisciplinary in teaching and research, with focus on Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and Governance, emerging areas in Public Policy, Environmental Governance and Green Politics, Gender and Politics, Political Economy and Geo-Politics.

Strategic Goals

  • Introduce multidisciplinary, NEP 2020-aligned courses, including new offerings on Political Developments in Odisha and Southeast Asia, Peace and Conflict Studies, Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and Governance, and Political Thinkers of Odisha with focused modules on Odisha’s changing electoral politics and psephology, its maritime security and historical ties with Southeast Asia. 
  • Increase external research funding from ICSSR, UGC, OSHEC, and other national and international agencies, while building interdisciplinary collaborations with departments in History, Archaeology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Statistics, Public Administration, and Women’s Studies. 
  • Strengthen placement, internship, and career guidance support through alumni connect and institutional collaborations, with alumni also providing academic mentoring to students and research scholars. 
  • Enhance community engagement through PRI exposure, internship training, constitutional values outreach, electoral awareness, and civic engagement programmes. 
  • Promote digital learning and research capability through ILMS content, SPSS/data analysis training, AI tools for social science research, and communication and leadership skill development.
