Exploring the identity and humanity through Language, Literature and Culture

The Odia Department was established in 1969 and has evolved into a renowned platform of pedagogical inspiration, critical thinking, inter-disciplinary research, and identity consciousness and linguistic vitality. At the same line, it enriches the study of Odia literature within the spectrum of intellectual traditions of India and the world. Its curriculum finds fascination with classical literary texts and traditions, literary theory and close reading, with various literary aspects of ancient, mediaeval, modern literature along with indigenous languages and knowledge systems depicted in the literary forms. The folklores of Odisha and its various genres critically examine the life and livelihood of the people and inspires indigenous skill practises of the artisan communities.

Thrust Areas of Research

Vision

  • To empower students to think differently and discuss Odia identity through language, literature, and culture from a holistic point of view in the contemporary intellectual climate of the World. And to train students in every branch of Odia language and literature with reference to the Indian pluri-literary tradition.

Mission

  • To create an academic atmosphere in which teaching–learning activities are student-centric.
  • To promote translation and comparative literary studies as the future of multilingual Indian context.
  • To promote multidisciplinary approach in the study of Odia literature and culture.
