Preparing Library and Information Science professionals to organize, manage, and lead knowledge in a digital age.
Established in 1981 in response to sustained demand from students and the public, the Department of Library and Information Science began with a one-year B.Lib.I.Sc. programme and introduced its M.Lib.I.Sc. programme in 1983. Since attaining regular departmental status, it has grown under the leadership of successive scholars into a centre for both professional training and academic research in library and information science.
In an era where information is increasingly digital, networked, and data-intensive, the department’s role extends well beyond traditional library management. It prepares professionals to navigate digital libraries, information technology and networking, knowledge management, and scientometric research, while equipping them with the research methodology and information literacy skills essential to today’s knowledge institutions. Through this blend of professional training and research, the department continues to shape LIS professionals capable of leading libraries and information centres into the future.
