Welcome to Department of Chemistry

The P. G. Department of Chemistry, established in the year 1967, has been imparting teaching and training in emerging fields of Chemistry and Chemical sciences through regular M. Sc., and Ph. D. programmes. During last 59 years, over 1300 students have passed their Master degree and more than 250 students have been awarded doctorates. The performance of our students in different national level examinations like GATE, NET, etc. is praise worthy. Most of the former and existing faculty members have been recognised both at national and international levels for excellence in research and availed research fellowships like Humboldt, DAAD, Fulbright, Commonwealth, BOYSCAST, JSPS, INSA for higher research and training at different period of time. Currently with 06 (six) well qualified faculty members, the Department is actively pursuing research in several frontier areas of chemical sciences. The thrust areas of research of the Department include materials chemistry and catalysis, Photo/electro-catalytic nanomaterials, Co-ordination chemistry, Polymer /polymer composites, Organometallic chemistry, LED material, Theoretical organic chemistry. On an average 30-35 research articles are being publishes in each academic year by the faculty members in different high impact factor journals of international repute. The Department has been well recognized at national level and received funds through UGC (Under SAP, ASSIST, DSA-I, DSA-II) and DST (FIST and PURSE) programmes besides sponsored research projects received by different faculty from various funding agencies from time to time. The Department is proud of its alumni who have earned name for the Department by occupying important academic and industrial positions in India and abroad. The Department has an active alumni association which meets annually and the Department gratefully acknowledge the generous contribution of alumni for academic development of the Department.

To create chemically literate society to minimize environmental pollution.

Alumni

THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, UTKAL UNIVERSITY (Regd. No. 2183-68 of 2016-17 under the Act XXI of 1860)

The first alumni meet of Department of Chemistry, Utkal University was held on 6^th May (Sunday), 1990 (the day following 4th Annual Conference of Orissa Chemical Society held on 4-5 May, 1990) with Prof. R. K. Nanda as President and Dr. B. C. Singh as Secretary. There after alumni meet was held on few occasions. From 2012 onwards, the alumni meet has been conducted regularly in the Department. The alumni association was formally registered as “The Alumni Association, Department of Chemistry, Utkal University” on 16/09/2016 (Regd. No. 2183-68/2016-2017).

Objectives:

“The Alumni Association”, Department of Chemistry, Utkal University has following objectives:

To create a platform for interaction among the old students and staff of the Department of Chemistry, Utkal University for the promotion and development of overall interest of Chemo-scientists.
To promote and update the student of all branches of Chemical Science.
For achieving the above objectives and overall development of the Department, Alumni, may undertake the following programmers and any other such steps as may be deemed necessary from time to time.
Publication of a directory (Name, Batch (year), Designation, Address, Telephone number, Activities etc. of the members)
Publication and circulation of newsletter/journals/seminar proceedings/special publications relating to different frontiers of chemistry.
Installation of Award(s) in frontier fields of Chemistry at institutional level, state level etc.
Felicitation to eminent chemistry.
Organization of seminar/workshops on any suitable themes of Chemistry and related fields

Activity Report

The Alumni Association has undertaken several activities during last few years

Felicitation of Ex-honoured faculty members of the Department in recognition to their contribution for overall development of the department and shaping the professional career of large number of students.
Certificate of Merit to the student securing First Position in M.Sc. examination.
The association instituted two merit prizes namely Prof. P. K. Jesthi Best student Award and Mrs. PravabatiJesthi best student award for securing highest marks among boys and girls, respectively out of the interest generated from the fund given by Dr. P.K. Jesthi.
The alumni of 1982-84 batch contributed substantial amount for renovation of floor departmental gallery. Barbered wire fencing for maintenance of garden and protect of trees have also been by the association.
During last one year, the number of Patron and life members has been increased to 75 and 100, respectively (as on 10/02/2017). Besides, several alumni have contributed generously for new activities in the Department. Some of the proposed activities initiated by the alumni association are:
‘Prof. Bhaskar Dash Scholarship’ to a poor and meritorious M.Sc. 1st year student.
It is proposed to conduct memorial lectures every year in the department every year in the name of following three ex-faculty members:

Late K. C. Dash and
Late Prof. V. Chakravortty

“Prof. R. K. Nanda Best seminar presentation award” every year to one student for presenting best student seminar in that year.
“Prof. A. C. Dash Best Paper Award” to a student pursuing Ph.D. in the Department.
Renovation of old store of the Department as “Golden Jubilee Hall” and renovation of gallery.
Publication of an ‘Alumni Directory’ with details of alumni to facilitate the department in general and students in particular as and when necessary.
Assistance in publication of “Golden Jubilee Souvenir” of the Department during 2017.
