Welcome to Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is one of the oldest Departments in Utkal University. The Department came into being in 1957 to impart Post Graduate teaching in Indian and Western Philosophy, classical and modern and encourage advance research in both the areas. Since its inception, it has grown under the able stewardship of scholars like Prof. Ratnakar Pati and Prof. Ganeswar Mishra. The Department came to limelight for its pioneering studies and research in the field of Analytical Philosophy with special emphasis on the Philosophy of Wittgenstein, Russel, A. J. Ayer, Ryle, Austin and Wisdom.

In recognition of the academic excellence as the centre of teaching and research, it was accorded the status of Department of Special Assistance by the U. G. C. in December,1988.

After three consecutive tenures of DSA programme, the performance of the department was reviewed by UGC on 27th and 28th December, 2006. The Department was upgraded as Centre of Advanced Study in Philosophy with effect from 1st April 2007. During this phase, the Department has taken a lead role in carrying out in-depth and extensive research in the field of Indian Philosophy, Philosophy of Value as well as in the area of Contemporary issues in Philosophy by publishing 36 (Thirty Six) number of books. The bi-annual journalIndian Journal of Analytical Philosophy” was newly published under the CAS programme.

Strategic Goals

  • Organize popular lectures on western and eastern philosophers for the benefit of students and faculty members of other Department
  • To translate, edit and interpret the classical philosophical texts of the thinkers of Odisha
