Welcome to the P.G. Department of Political Science, Utkal University. Established in 1958 at Ravenshaw College, Cuttack and shifted to Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar in 1962, the Department is one of the oldest centres of Political Science education in Eastern India. Over the decades, the Department has nurtured generations of students, researchers, teachers, administrators and public leaders. The Department has been recognized under UGC-SAP DRS-I and DRS-II, and continues to promote teaching, research, innovation and public engagement in core and emerging areas of Political Science.

The Department offers M.A. and Ph.D. programmes and maintains a strong academic culture through seminars, special lectures, research activities, field exposure, student mentoring, alumni interaction and interdisciplinary learning. Its thrust areas include Public Policy and Governance, Gender and Politics, Development Studies, Tribal Studies, Rural and Urban Governance, Foreign Policy, Environmental Governance, Comparative Politics, Political Sociology and India and its Neighbours.

VISION:

  • To develop the Department into a Centre for Excellence in Political Studies.
  • To create cutting-edge research linking local issues with global debates in emerging areas of Political Science.
  • Introduce multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses aligned with NEP 2020 aiming towards Viksit Bharat and Viksit Odisha.

MISION:

  • To develop collaborative research programmes with Government and other research institutions of national and international repute.
  • To make the subject inclusive and multidisciplinary in teaching and research, with focus on Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and Governance, emerging areas in Public Policy, Environmental Governance and Green Politics, Gender and Politics, Political Economy and Geo-Politics.
  • To upgrade the Department into a Centre for Advanced Studies, focusing on teaching, research, innovation, collaboration and extension activities.

Strategic Goals / Way Forward:

  • Introduce multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary courses aligned with NEP 2020.
  • Develop new courses on the Political Developments in Odisha and South East Asia, Peace and Conflict Studies, Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and Governance, and Political Thinkers from Odisha.
  • Strengthen placement, internship and career guidance support through alumni connect and institutional collaboration.
  • To focus and develop syllabus incorporating 1. Changing Politics and Psephology in Odisha; 2. Studies in Odish’s Maritime Security and historical linkages with South East Asia; 3. Module on political thinkers of Odisha.
  • Increase external research funding from ICSSR, UGC, OSHEC and other national/international agencies.
  • Build collaborations with institutions and departments in History, Archaeology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Statistics, Public Administration and Women’s Studies.
  • Enhance community engagement through PRI exposure, internship training, constitutional values outreach, electoral awareness and civic engagement programmes.
  • Promote digital learning, ILMS content, SPSS/data analysis training, AI tools for social science research, communication skills and leadership development.
  • Strengthen alumni connect to provide academic mentoring and support to students and research scholars.
