The Department of Commerce take pride as a jewel on the crown of Utkal University. It started its journey way back in 1962, after the university had relocated to its present Vani Vihar campus. Our founder, Professor Surya Kanta Das, the first Indian to get a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Washington University laid the first stone of this educational empire. His visionary leadership and intellectual insights are the heritage that the department resembles to practice. Continuing the legacy, the department is fortunate to have nationally and internationally renowned faculties exhibiting exceptional research exposure offered with prestigious research funding. Students of the department have consistently qualified a number of examinations both at the state and national level over the years and are placed in various academic and industry positions offered through State Selection Board(SSB), Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) and UGC-NET JRF and LS.
The Department offered M. Com, M.Phil., and Ph.D. as regular programmes to the students of not only Odisha but also across the country. In recognition of the significant contributions made by this department in the field of business studies, DRS (Department Research Support) programme was started in the department DRS I (2002-7), DRS II (2007-12) and DRS III (2013-18). Thrust area of DRS was on “Entrepreneurial Innovation in MSME Sector for Sustainable Tribal Area Development in Odisha”. The Department celebrated its golden Jubilee in the year 2011-12 with various national and international activities. In the year 1984 the Department started MBA in its own building which was separated in the year 1989 and now it is successfully running as Department of MBA. In the 1996 a self-financing programme MFC (Master of Finance and Control) was introduced in the department which was the first of its kind in the entire eastern region of India which provided 100% placement to the students across the Industries. In the year 2015 MFC was renamed as MBA (Financial Management) as per requirement of the UGC. The department has a very robust alumni base, with many of its alumni well established in various walks of life. The Alumni Association of the department organises an annual Memorial Lecture in memory of its Founder, Professor Surya Kanta Das.
