The Post-Graduate Department of Sanskrit started in the year 1957 with an objective of imparting quality education in the field of Sanskrit and is one of the oldest Departments of the University. It has already celebrated its golden Jubilee Anniversary in the year 2006-2007. At present the Department of Sanskrit offers M.A, M. Phil, Ph.D and D.Litt. Programmes. The Department has regularly updated its syllabus to meet the challenges of changing times. In the year 2000 semester system and in 2013 Choice Based Credit System was introduced for the same. In the Department P. G. Diploma in Yoga Therapy (PGDYT) as UGC innovative programme and Master degree in Human Consciousness and Yogic Science (MDHCYS) as self- financing course was introduced since 1998 & 2006 respectively. Late Prof. Prahlad Pradhan, a renowned grammarian and a prominent scholar in Pali and Chinese Language was the first Professor & Head of the Department who has contributed a lot to the above fields & first adorned the chair of Vice-Chancellor of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri. Successively, five Professors of the Department have become Vice-Chancellors of Different Universities of Odisha. Many Faculty members have received the prestigious President’s award & Shastrachudamani Sammana in appreciation of their dedicated service for the cause of Sanskrit learning and research Taking the challenges of modern society, the Department has produced many Scholars holding significant positions in different institutions in India & abroad.

To mould a new generation of citizens with confidence, self dependence, self- realization, rational thinking, professionalism, thirst for knowledge and contentment.To bring out the wealth of knowledge in Sanskrit through publication of rare and unpublished manuscripts through interdisciplinary research.
