Biosketch – Prof. Shreerup Goswami
Prof. Shreerup Goswami, an accomplished geoscientist with over 28 years of research experience, is presently serving as Professor in the Department of Geology, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He completed his M.Sc. and M.Phil. from Utkal University and pursued advanced research at the Birbal Sahani Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow (formerly Birbal Sahani Institute of Palaeobotany), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. He earned his Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees while serving this prestigious institute.
Prof. Goswami’s academic journey spans several leading universities. He has earlier held the positions of Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, Sambalpur University; Associate Professor in the Department of Geology, Ravenshaw University; and Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science, Fakir Mohan University. Across these institutions, he has served as Head of the Department for six terms.
Currently, he is a Member of the Research Advisory Council of the Birbal Sahani Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, and a Member of the Syndicate of both Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and Dharanidhar University, Keonjhar. He also holds the position of Director, Students’ Welfare, Utkal University. His previous administrative roles include Director, IQAC; Coordinator, RUSA; Convenor, University Science Instrumentation Centre; Director, Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology; Professor-in-Charge of the Centre of Innovation and Incubation; and Professor-in-Charge, Systems, among others.
Prof. Goswami’s research contributions cover Palaeontology, Stratigraphy, Environmental Geology, Urban Geology, and Acoustic Science. He has successfully executed six major research projects funded by prominent national agencies including DST (Government of India), ICSSR, UGC, and the Science & Technology Department, Government of Odisha. His prolific publication record includes around 164 research papers, of which 120 appear in SCOPUS/SCI-indexed journals of high repute, such as those published by Springer, Elsevier, Cambridge University Press, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Polish Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he has authored over 30 popular science articles in Odia, English, and Hindi, four textbooks published by government agencies, two reference books and two, edited books and 51 chapters in edited books.
A dedicated mentor, he has supervised 27 Ph.D. scholars to completion, and one scholar has earned a D.Sc. under his guidance. His intellectual property portfolio includes four international patents and four Indian copyrights. His Google Scholar metrics stand at 3,100 citations, an h-index of 31, and an i10-index of 100, while his Scopus h-index is 23.
Prof. Goswami’s academic engagements have taken him across the globe to present his research at international conferences. He is a recipient of the prestigious BOYSCAST Fellowship (DST, Government of India), under which he conducted palaeoclimate and climate change research at the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. His postdoctoral research was carried out at the Bernard Price Institute of Palaeontology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and at AEON–Africa Earth Observatory Network, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He serves on the editorial boards of several reputed journals, including Scientific Reports and the Journal of the Palaeontological Society of India, and reviews manuscripts for over 35 international journals published by Springer, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and others. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of India and the National Environmentalists Association, and a life member of 20 scientific professional bodies, with membership in the executive councils of several.
Prof. Goswami has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Anil Chandra Award 2024 (highest cash prize award) by the Geological Society of India for his significant contributions to palaeontology—becoming the first teacher from Odisha’s universities and colleges to receive any distinction from Geologial Society of India. He received the Young Scientist Award (2008) from the Odisha Bigyana Academy, being the first geologist to be honoured with it. In 2011, he was conferred the Academy’s highest award in Physical Science, the Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award, for outstanding contributions to science—becoming the youngest recipient and the first geologist in the award’s history. In 2014, he was awarded the Sri Gopinath Mohanty Pratibha Award by Bigyan Prachar Samiti for popularising science in regional languages, especially Odia. He was also felicitated in 2017 by the Council of Science and Technology, Government of Chhattisgarh, for his contributions to the field of geology.
