Born on 26th September 1954 in the village ¬Paikarapur, Dist.-Puri, Orissa. Completed the H.S.C. from Baragada Govt. High School, Bhubaneswar in the year 1971. She graduated from S.B. Womens College, Cuttack in the year 1975. Passed M.Sc. (Botany) from the Department of Botany, Utkal University in 1977. Joined as CSIR Junior Research Fellow at the Department of Botany, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, Rajasthan and the topic of Ph.D. was ‘Studies on Primary and Secondary Metabolites of Some Selected Medicinal Plants in vivo and in vitro’ and completed Ph.D. in 1983 under the supervision of Prof. Puspha Khanna. Joined as a Research Assistant in March 1983 in the Department of Botany, Utkal University and as a Lecturer in 1985. Subsequently she became a senior Lecturer in 1990, Reader in 1999 and Professor in 2007.
During 1988-89 she had the opportunity to work at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai as a National Research Associate sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology Govt, of India. Her areas of specialization cover Plant Biochemistry and Enzymology, Molecular Biology, Plant tissue culture, Fungal, Biotechnology and Bioprocess engineering. To date, she published 150 research papers, 4 books, 15 book chapters and several popular articles. Under her able guidance 28 scholars have already been awarded Ph.D. Degree. She has executed successfully six major research projects funded by UGC, UGC-DAE, DST (Govt of Odisha) and Monet Ispat and Energy Ltd., Angul.
In addition to her responsibility as the Head of the Department of Botany, Utkal University (2011-13), she had also contributed to the Department in various important capacities as the Course Co-ordinator, M.Sc. in Applied Microbiology (2012-14), Chairman, SRC Microbiology (2013-15), Co-ordinator, UGC-SAP-DRS ,2013-14; Chairman, SRC-Botany,2011-13; Chairman, SRC Environmental Science, 2011-13; Chairman, Board of Studies in Microbiology, 20l3; Member, Board of Studies in Botany, 2009-13; Member, Board of Studies in Environmental Science, 2009-13. Besides, she shouldered the responsibility as the Secretary of the Teachers Council of the Department, 2000-2011; Advisor of the Parijatak Seminar, 2005- 2011, NSS Programme Officer of the Department, 2008-09; the Secretary of the Alumni Association of the Department, 2005-2011; V.C nominee Stewart Science College, 2013-15; and Chairman purchase committee & selection committee RPRC, BBSR.
