  • Samanta Chandra Sekhar Awardee, Prof. Dutta is a renowned herpetologist of International repute, who has published more than 220 papers including Nature and Science, 13 books and guided 35 Ph D students. His research areas included Systematics & Biogeography, Wildlife & Conservation Biology, and Cell & Developmental Biology. He has been working on phylogeography of various taxa of frogs in the country and his collaborators are from ZSI, Kolkata, WII, Dehradun, CCMB, Hyderabad, NCBS, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has collaborations with more than 30 international institutions and universities world over.
  • He has served in various capacities in College of Basic Science, OUAT, Utkal University and North Orissa University from where he got superannuated in 2012 as a Professor of Zoology. During his professional career, his administrative assignments included Head of the Department; Warden; Chairperson, PG Council; member of Syndicate, Senate and Academic Council; Director, College Development Council; and Vice Chancellor (I/C), North Orissa University. Post superannuation, he served as a Visiting Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (August, 2012-31 July 2014); and Curator in Herpetology & Scientific Associate, NCBS- TIFR, Bangalore (presently honorary position). A genus (Duttaphrynus) and four species are named after him which shows his scientific contribution towards animal science. Besides, his herpetofaunal collections has been the basis of one wing/gallery both at ZSI, Kolkata and Regional Museum of Natural History, Bhubaneswar. He has been elected as a Fellow, National Science Academy and Fellow, Zoological Society of India. During his professional career, he has successfully executed 12 externally funded projects from agencies like UGC, CSIR, MoEF & CC, Green Peace, SERB-DST and DBT, Govt. of India.
  • Prof. Dutta has envious professional achievements, some of which include Member, DST, Govt. of India-PAC (Animal Sciences) (2004-2006 & 2007- 2015); Member, DBT, Govt. of India: Sub-committee on DNA Barcoding; Governing Body Member, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun (2006-2010); Member, Wildlife Institute of India Committee for Selection, Assessment & Promotion (ICSAP-I) (2008-2013); Governing Council Member, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology & Natural History (2009-2011); Member, Expert Committee, Revision of Wildlife Protection Act, Govt. of India; Governing Body Member, Similipal Eco-Tourism Society, Govt. of Odisha (Forest Department: 2008-2013); Co-Chairman: IUCN/SSC/DAPTF-SA (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources/Species Survival Commission/Declining Amphibian Population Task Force, South Asia (1994-2006); Co-Chairman, IUCN/SSC-ISRAG (1990-94); Advisor, Nature & Wildlife Conservation Society of Orissa; Working President: Centre for Biodiversity Conservation; Founder Member, Tiger Trax; Member, Odisha Biodiversity Board; and President, Zoological Society of Orissa.
