RESEARCH STATEMENT
Professor Shreerup Goswami is a palaeobotanist, environmental geoscientist and interdisciplinary researcher whose work spans deep-time Earth history, fossil biodiversity, basin evolution, organic geochemistry, acoustic science, groundwater studies and traditional knowledge systems. His research weaves together multiple strands of Earth and life sciences to build an integrated understanding of how ecosystems have evolved, interacted with climate and responded to environmental change over hundreds of millions of years.
A major focus of his work is the study of Gondwana floras and climate transitions across India and other southern continents. Through extensive fieldwork, fossil collection, laboratory analysis and comparative synthesis, he reconstructs climate–biosphere interactions from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Jurassic. His research on Gondwana basins of India provides key insights into vegetational change, extinction and radiation events, sedimentary responses to climate fluctuations and the evolution of deep-time ecosystems.
Professor Goswami works on Permian glossopterids, a dominant group of gymnosperms that shaped the Indian Permian flora. His systematic re-evaluation of Glossopteris taxonomy has reduced over a century of inflated and artificial species naming into a coherent classification of 28 biologically meaningful species complexes. By integrating leaf morphology, cuticular features, reproductive structures and palaeogeographic distribution, he has clarified the natural diversity, evolution and ecological significance of this iconic fossil group.
His research extends to detailed studies of megafloral and palynofloral assemblages from major Indian coalfields such as Talcher, Ib River, Korba, Mand–Raigarh, Hasdo–Arand, Singrauli, Bokaro and Karanpura. These analyses document diversification patterns, evolutionary trajectories and ecological restructuring during the critical Permian–Triassic transition—a key interval that witnessed profound climatic upheaval and ecosystem turnover.
Another core theme of Professor Goswami’s work involves plant–insect interactions in the Permian, where he has identified a remarkable variety of herbivory damage types at multiple Gondwana localities. His basin-wise comparison of herbivory indices has opened new perspectives on early arthropod behaviour, plant defences and the origins of terrestrial ecological networks long before the advent of angiosperms.
His interdisciplinary approach also encompasses palynofacies analysis, palaeodepositional reconstruction, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and biomarker geochemistry, which he applies to infer sedimentary environments and evaluate hydrocarbon potential in Gondwana basins. His discovery of marine signatures—such as ichnofossils, acritarchs and phosphorite nodules—in formations traditionally considered entirely freshwater has reshaped understanding of Indian Permian palaeogeography.
Beyond palaeobotany and basin studies, Professor Goswami contributes to groundwater quality research, evaluating fluoride, nitrate and emerging contaminants, delineating groundwater potential zones and assessing associated public health risks through geospatial and hydrogeochemical methods.
He is also engaged in pioneering interdisciplinary studies on acoustic science and the biophysical impact of devotional music on plants. Through controlled acoustic chamber experiments, he has demonstrated that devotional sound vibrations (Naam-Sankirtan) significantly enhance germination, growth, physiological performance and yield in Vigna radiata, with ongoing extensions to Tomato and Tulasi. This research aims to establish sound as a non-chemical, holistic and sustainable agricultural input.
Prof. Shreerup Goswami works at the intersection of coastal vulnerability science, shoreline dynamics, long-term drought assessment, and rapid cyclone impact analysis, with a focused regional emphasis on Odisha. His research encompasses a global synthesis of coastal resilience studies, geospatial evaluation of shoreline change and habitat stress along the Balasore coast, a comprehensive 120-year (1901–2020) drought variability and teleconnection assessment, and a rapid eco-physical impact analysis of Cyclone Amphan. Collectively, his work applies remote sensing, GIS, and climate analytics to strengthen coastal management strategies, climate adaptation planning, and disaster risk reduction frameworks.
Professor Goswami is further involved in exploring indigenous meteorology, particularly the use of Vedic astronomical parameters (graha and nakshatra movements) to forecast regional rainfall. By comparing traditional Panchang/Panjika predictions with instrumental meteorological data, he works to scientifically validate and refine ancient weather-forecasting systems.
Across all these themes, Professor Goswami’s research reflects a commitment to bridging ancient environmental archives with modern sustainability challenges, integrating science with cultural wisdom, and advancing knowledge across multiple interconnected domains of Earth and life sciences
