Founder Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Utkal University (2002 – 2010)

Gagan Bihari Nityananda Chainy, born on 8th May 1950, is a man with prospective scientific visions and research outlooks. He completed his graduation in Zoology (Hons) from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, Odisha in the year 1970 and moved to Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi to pursue higher studies where he completed his M.Sc. degree with Biochemistry as specialization in the year 1972. Then he served for a short period of six months as lecturer in P. G. Department of Zoology, Utkal University and proceeded to Banaras Hindu University to obtain his Ph.D. degree under the guidance of late Padma Shri Prof. M.S. Kanungo, F.N.A. on metabolic changes during aging. He joined as a lecturer in the Post-Graduate Department of Zoology in the year 1979 and retired as Professor from the same Department in the year 2010. He is the pioneer of the P.G. Department of Biotechnology, Utkal University. With his scientific pursuit, he has always thrived for greater scientific undertakings. He has been endowed with various fellowships, prestigious awards and honorary recognition. He has received various fellowships such as National merit scholarship for M.Sc., UGC- JRF, UGC-SRF, National merit scholarship for PhD in USA, French Government scholarship, MD Andersion Cancer Centre. Various awards such as University Grant commission visiting associateship, 1994, Fellow of Bioved Society of Research, Allahabad, UP, 1999, University Grant Commission Research Awardee in 1999 and Samanta Chandrasekhar Award by Odisha Bigyan Academy, 1999. He has a remarkable publication record with 90 research papers, several popular science articles and seven books with a citation score as high as 5655. He has supervised and mentored twenty doctoral students. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, Honorary Fellow of Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy and Zoological Society of India. He was a UGC Emeritus Fellow (2013-2015) and DBT Visiting Research Professor NER (2017-2018).
