Prof. D. Bhatta obtained his M.Sc. degree from Berhampur University in 1968 and joined as a Lecturer in Chemistry in Govt. Science College, Bhawanipatna. He joined Utkal University as a research assistant in 1970 and obtained Ph.D. in 1976 under the guidance of Late Prof. S. R. Mohanty. Thereafter, Dr. Bhatt joined as a Lecturer in the department of chemistry, Utkal University. During last 27 years in the department, Dr. Bhatt worked as a Lecturer, a Reader and finally superannuated in 2003 as a Professor of chemistry. He has also served as the head of the department (Oct 1996 to May 1999).
His research area includes solid state and radiation chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, environmental science, oncology and the study of biological activities of new heterocycles. Prof. Bhatta published about 150 papers in national and international journals and successfully guided 25 Ph.D. students. He has also operated several research projects funded by DAE, DST and UGC.
In recognition of his contribution to the scientific community, Prof. Bhatta has been bestowed Prof. Dayanidhi Pattnaik award (2002), Samanta Chandra Sekhar award (2003), Silver medal by solid-state chemists (SOC) (2005). He is a fellow of the Institute of Chemists (FIC) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
After retirement, he has served as a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Sri Jayadev Centre for Pharmaceutical Science, Naharkanta, Odisha, and as an Honorary Professor at Centurion University, Bhubaneswar. Prof. Bahtta left for his heavenly abode on April 9, 2018.
