Born on 2nd April 1954 at Surada in the Ganjam District of Odisha. Passed Matriculation from Sashi Bhusan High School, Surada. Graduated from Khallikote College Berhampur in 1974. He passed M. Sc. In Botany with algal physiology as special paper from department of Botany, Berhampur University in 1976. He did Ph. D. From Berhampur University in 1980. Joined as Lecturer at Nawarangpur College in 1980 and then at Dharanidhar College, Keonjhar and finally as Senior Lecturer in Department of Botany, Utkal University on 20th October, 1987. Subsequently he moved to Department of Biotechnology, Visva-Bharati (A Central University) Santiniketan as Professor in 2009. Then become Vice Chancellor, Fakir Mohan University , Vyasa Vihar (24.05.2014 to 02.08-2017), Balasore.

His area of research include biodiversity and molecular phylogeny of Cyanobacteria and Algae, Genomics of cyanobacteria from stressed environments, Biodeterioration of stone monuments of India and their conservation, Biofertilizers (BGA and Seaweed Liquid Extract) for agriculture and Rural based biotechnology for Bioentrepreneurship in organic farming. He baged several awards namely Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award in Life Science for scientific contribution in the state of Odisha during 1999; Dr. B.P. Pal National Environmental Fellowship Award for Biodiversity by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India in 2009; Life time achievement Award in Phycology” conferred with a medal and citation by Krishnamurthy Institute of Algology, Chennai in 2011; Prof. Harihar Pattnaik memorial Award in Environmental science, by Orissa Botanical Society at Ravenshaw University in 2012; U.G.C. Research Award during IXth plan, New Delhi in 1999; Young Scientist Award by Indian Botanical Society in 1983. He became Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS), Fellow of Indian Botanical Society (FBS), Fellow of National Environmentalists Association (FNEA). He visited Germany as DAAD Fellow during 1982-1983 at the Institute for Microbiology, Albert Ludwigs University, Freiburg, Germany. As a visiting fellow, supported by J.S.P.S. at the National Institute for Basic Biology, Okazaki, Japan during 1991-1992. Subsequently visited University of Konstanz, Germany; Justus Leibig University, Giessen, Germany; Institute of Botany, Trebon, Czech Republic; at the Forschungs Zentrum, Juelich, Germany; University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, University of Messina, Sicily, and the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, University of Florence, Italy. He visit to Commenius University, Bratislava, Slovak Republic through a Visiting Fellowship of Slovak National Science Programme. Then he visited to Biological Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary though INSA-HAS Exchange of scientists visit. He supervised 27 Ph. D. Scholars and published 5 books, Edited book chapters 62 and more than 160 research papers and in National and International Journals.
